THE GLOBAL FOOD EXPERIENCE
FAMILY DEVOTION: A HEART OF COMPASSION
WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER ABOUT OUTSIDE THE BOWL’S
GLOBAL FOOD EXPERIENCE?
1. DEFINING COMPASSION
Ask: What is compassion? Go around the table and have everyone share what they think the word means.
Ask: Who is someone you know that shows compassion to others?
Ask: Sometimes people do not show compassion. Why do you think that is (examples: inconvenience, selfishness, the sacrifice of time or money)? Have everyone share an idea.
COMPASSION IS BEING CONCERNED FOR SOMEONE IN NEED
AND THEN TAKING ACTION TO HELP THAT PERSON.
2. AN EXAMPLE OF COMPASSION
Ask: Why should we show compassion?
Read: God is a compassionate God. He loves us and everyone is valuable to Him (John 3:16). Through His Son Jesus, He offers salvation and new life (Romans 8:11). This new life is an example of God showing us compassion every day. Our response should be a heart of compassion, showing concern for those who are hurting and in need, and taking action to help.
3. THE GOOD SAMARITAN
Read: Read the story of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10:25-37. For younger children, assign everyone a part and act out the story. You’ll need people to play the man, robbers, a priest, a Levite, a Samaritan, a donkey, and an innkeeper. For older children, go around the table and have everyone help read the story.
Ask: How did the Samaritan show compassion to the man who was hurt?
Ask: Why did the priest and Levite not help? For older children, use a commentary to better understand the culture of the time and why these groups didn’t associate with each other.
4. GO AND DO LIKEWISE
Ask: What does it mean when Jesus says, “Go and do likewise.”?
Read: God wants us to show compassion to others. When we are absorbed in our own feelings, problems, worries, and desires, we overlook the opportunity to help those God puts in our path. Start by asking Him to show you the needs around you and how you can respond with compassion.
Challenge: Look for someone to show compassion to. Is there a friend, neighbor, or family member that is hurting and needs help?
God, we are broken people in need of the love that only you can give. Thank you for the compassion you show us and the new life we have in your Son Jesus. Like the Good Samaritan, help us to have eyes to see the needs around us and then to do what we can to meet it. Help us to be kind and tenderhearted (Ephesians 4:32) and to get rid of any bitterness or anger (Ephesians 4:31) that may be standing in the way of us loving people the way you want us to. Help us today to live in a way that honors you. Amen.
IF WE ARE WILLING, WE CAN BE GOD’S
COMPASSION TO SOMEONE IN NEED.
OUTSIDE THE BOWL SHOWING COMPASSION
"We noticed that most of the students were coming to school hungry. Their time at school was not very
productive because they were hungry. ... We were really praying for an answer to provide a meal a day
and be able to afford it. That was when we came across Outside the Bowl."
